    Songs like "Helen of Troy" and "Sudden Death" have a great dramatic feel to them, but Cale's version of "Baby, What You Want Me to Do", though tightly played, somehow doesn't really work in this context, and its a track that may well be the first you want to skip over. Though not among the very best Cale releases, still a very good album/5(18).

    Great Cale songs are adorned with horns, strings, crunching guitars and bursts of noise on this gem featuring Brian Eno, Phil Collins and Chris Spedding.     Some of the heavily grooving pieces, like "Helen of Troy", "Pablo Picasso" or "Sudden Death", are first class John Cale. Unfortunately, some of the interspersed ballads are just as bad, with a string drenched version of "I Keep a Close Watch" as the negative highlight. Anyone interested in seventies Cale should stick to the Guts compilation.

    Helen of Troy was released without the consent of Cale, who considered that the tapes were not finished. Cale was touring when the album was released. Cale was touring when the album was released. For the spring tour to promote Slow Dazzle, he assembled guitarist Chris Spedding alongside Sandy Denny 's previous rhythm section of Pat Donaldson (bass) and Timi Donald (drums).

    It’s an element as perennial a feature on John Cale albums as his viola playing: the ‘ghost song.’ “Sudden Death” is performed at treacle/slug speed as a trudge epic with oppressive organ, drums and a phased bridge with strings until seasick viola needles in static-y treatments until falling away with further ghost piano as an inspired finale to an equally inspired album.
